As a freshman, Lizbeth took a trip with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute to Washington D.C. and spoke with Senators and Legislators. She felt like many people aren’t aware of the laws they are voting for or against, and she wanted to do something to provide more education, especially to Latino voters.
“I kept running into the same problem, too many young people, especially in rural or low-income communities, had no idea how to get involved,” said Lizbeth.
That’s why she created the Civic Engagement Guide, a resource to empower youth from underprivileged backgrounds by connecting them to leadership and civic opportunities. The Guide is provided through a youth-led organization called Civic Activist and is now available throughout the United States, Mexico and will be offered in Guatemala this fall.
Lizbeth performed research on political polarization and the barriers to civic engagement in rural Latino communities with state legislators that helped influence the information that goes in the Guide.
Next, she founded Civic Activist, a national campaign that bridges the civic literacy gap across the world. Since its launch, they have distributed over 25,000 civic engagement guides and led students in writing 30,000 letters to veterans.
Lizbeth is also involved in FBLA as a 2x state officer and is the first national officer from her school, where she serves as region Vice President, serving over 200,000 members. She was recently named a 2025 Coca-Cola Scholar, one of only 150 recipients nationwide chosen from a pool of over 105,000 applicants.
She is the Chair of Buckeye’s Civic Engagement Committee and works on the AZ Youth Votes campaign. She plans to study Public Policy and pursue a law degree.
